Neely Media Restaurant Review

This month, The Hampton Roads Flavor File spotlights Wang Jiang Lou Chinese Fusion in Virginia Beach.
The review focuses on five categories: food quality, presentation and creativity, customer service, beverage program, and atmosphere.
Wang Jiang Lou creates a Chinese-inspired atmosphere with warm lighting, a clean interior, an open layout, and an inviting design. The atmosphere was one of the strongest parts of the experience.

What We Tried

The meal included Sichuan-style spicy edamame, wild peppercorn and wood-ear mushrooms, bok choy with mushrooms and tofu, smoked duck fried rice, warm sake, and yuzu citrus lemonade.
The wood-ear mushrooms were soft, thin, and chewy, prepared with fermented chili, garlic, chopped wild peppercorns, and rice vinegar.
The bok choy, mushrooms, and tofu were prepared well. The bok choy leaves were tender, the stalks remained crisp, the shiitake mushrooms were thinly sliced, and the tofu had crisp edges with a firm center.

The Smoked Duck Fried Rice

The smoked duck fried rice was hearty, with vegetables, egg, and a noticeable smoked sesame note. While the rice itself worked well, the duck was dry, tough, and slightly gamey.

Service, Drinks & Atmosphere

Service was pleasant, attentive, and timely.
The beverage program showed promise, especially the yuzu citrus lemonade. A broader sake selection or more pairing guidance could further elevate the dining experience.
Overall, Wang Jiang Lou offered a polished atmosphere, noticeable fusion influences, and several strong dishes. The restaurant showed particular promise in its ambiance, service, and vegetable-forward dishes.
